Sept. 16, 2013 (Largo, Fla.) – The state of Florida is facing a prescription drug abuse epidemic. An average of 11 daily lethal drug overdoses occur in Florida, nationally accounting for 70 percent of total drug deaths. In response to this major community issue, Dr. Charles K. Friedman, a long-time Bay Area Interventional Pain physician, has opened a state-of-the-art substance use disorder treatment center – Recovery Resources of Florida. The Recovery Resources of Florida team treats a variety of substance use disorders including illicit drugs, prescription drugs, alcohol, inhalants and solvents, and other hallucinogens or stimulants.
While prescription narcotics can be beneficial in the treatment plan for a patient in pain, there are serious risk factors involved when they are inappropriately distributed or consumed. The Clinical Journal of Pain reports that the total annual cost of prescription opioid abuse in the United States is $8.6 billion and continues to grow. Likewise, according to a Progressive Medical Drug Spend Analysis, narcotic expenses account for 34 percent of employee medication costs. Dr. Friedman has seen this first hand in his Pain Medicine practice for more than two decades.
After completing an Addiction Medicine fellowship program with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine, Dr. Friedman is now the only dual-practicing physician in the region trained and certified in the specialties of Addiction Medicine and Pain Management. The new facility’s team will include Dr. Philip F. Bagenski, who also completed the addiction fellowship program at the University of Florida. Together, Dr. Friedman and Dr. Bagenski utilize their expertise to better serve those in our area requiring substance use support and services.
“My training and specialized experience treating the most complex patients – with histories of prior inappropriate approaches to pain control – helps me provide prevention, screening, intervention, and treatment for patients experiencing substance use and related disorders,” says Dr. Friedman. “With an expert, multi-disciplinary team in place, the new center is providing much-needed care including detoxification, medication management and psychological counseling to those in need.”
Patients suffering from dependency issues alone or in combination with a dual diagnosis of pain and/or psychiatric disorders are finding a healthy lifestyle and recovery at arm’s reach.
“To ensure continual maintenance for patients who begin their treatment program at Recovery Resources of Florida, we have developed relationships with various mental health professionals and other treatment centers throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties and are looking forward to increasing that care network even further,” says Dr. Friedman.
Recovery Resources of Florida is located at 8839 Bryan Dairy Road, Suite 215, Largo, FL 33777. The facility is in a non-residential setting and treatment provided is based on individual need.
